Metrics Workshop Wednesday 8/15
Time:
Location: Carpenter Hall, Blue Room

No Fee
Lunch is Provided

Part 1: What is a metric and what should be measured. Getting started isn't as hard as you think it is

Part 2: How to manage the measures information (e.g., MS Excel and Access) - Use of MS Excel to create a basic spreadsheet to track info and the issues / limitations. Then how to build a basic MS Access database.

Part 3: How to properly display your metrics? - Bob Emery's presentation on how to properly display metric. Additionally, a "show-n-tell" style critique for attendees to bring their existing metrics and the group to review. The "show-n-tell" would be at the end of the presentation series for those who are interested.

This is a:

  • Hands-on presentation / workshop so people will want to bring their laptops.
  • Each presentation will start with general discussions on these topics as intros but then follow a common "Incident Tracking" thread throughout. This will help provide consistency to the presentations. For example...
  • Discuss and list the important "Incident" metrics and what needs to be measured to create this metric. We are also looking into the concept of measures/data which support EHS-activities and those which support metric-activities.
  • Once the list of measures is generated, using MS Excel to track the info and then actually build an Incident database in MS Access. We'll show them how to build tables, link tables together, build queries, build forms to display / input data, and build reports to display data.
  • The incident database will be a basic / simplified database with only 2-3 tables so people can understand the basic concepts.
  • Then use raw data to develop metrics on incidents (similar to his Fire Safety diagrams).
  • Each presentation will probably have materials (e.g., example data, incident database design model, ) for distribution prior to conference to facilitate the workshop which will be downloadable from the website.
